has
painted for over 30 years, developing his self-taught and
highly personalized style. His paintings are full of vibrant
color and are realistic in detail. They include impressions
gained firsthand through observation and close study of the
subjects chosen. His technique has evolved through painting
with oils, watercolors, and acrylics, working mainly in acrylics.
While
painting of a series of commissioned originals for the state
of South Carolina, he was encouraged to have his paintings
printed. Early success with the first prints led to a full
time career as a professional artist. After establishing himself
with over 40 limited edition prints, Gordon, his wife, Paula,
and daughter, Marcie, decided in 1990 to take another big
step and open the Gordon Wheeler Gallery in Charleston, S.C.
Inspired
by personal experiences and travels, Gordon continues to expand
his subject matter. He loves painting a wide variety of subjects
including the breathtaking beauty of historic Charleston,
the surrounding low country coastline area and golf courses.
Gordon’s first golf prints were of "amen corner"
and the practice range at Augusta National Golf Course. Gordon
achieved wide recognition when he was commissioned to paint
the famous Ocean Course for the 1991 Ryder Cup official prints
and posters.
Gordon’s
commissioned work for various PGA events incudes the official
prints and posters for the 1991 Ryder Cup at Kiawah Island,
the 1995 Ryder Cup at Oak Hill, the PGA Championships at Valhalla
(1996 and 2000), Winged Foot (1997), and Sahalee (1998). He
painted for the World Cup of Golf at Kiawah Island (1997)
and the PGA Tour Championship at East Lake at Atlanta (1998).
His successful golf art is collected worldwide. Gordon enjoys
golfing the championship courses as well as painting them.
Maintaining a studio at his home overlooking the green next
to the clubhouse enables Gordon to merge his two passions.
